 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija'peres 16 April 1971 until March 31, 1995) popularly referred to as Selena was an American Tejano singer. Selena was known as the "Queen Tejano music", her contribution to fashion and music helped make her one of the most well-known entertainers from Mexico of all time. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin chart of songs. Her clothing choices have earned her the moniker "Tejano Madonna". She also ranks among the most famous Latin artists ever and is believed to have helped propel the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest member of the Quintanilla family, she first appeared in the world of music as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, that also included her older siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. She was often criticised during the 1980s and she was refused performances at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a male-dominated genre. But her popularity increased after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She won nine times consecutively. She was signed to EMI Latin in 1989. Her self-titled debut album was released in the year following. Her brother was her main music producer and the songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) peaked at number 1 in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight months in a row. Many music critics referred to it as"the "breakthrough record" of her career because of its commercial chart-topping success. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a huge hit and became her signature track. Live! (1993) was awarded Best Mexican/American album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to win this award. Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It was one of America's top Latin albums. It was widely credited with initiating Tejano music's very first commercial era. It became one of Latin music's most popular subgenres.
